Listen to my nonsense on Audioboo →
I’m back using the excellent Audioboo and intending to do so for the foreseeable future. I’ve always liked it, but never given it a proper go. My contributions are essentially nonsense combined with some sort of writing tip or suggestion. Tempted? Of course you are.

Write for Your Life podcast joins 70Decibels →
Long time no post. I’ve been busy moving house and that kind of thing. Stressful business. Anyway, while I’ve been away, it so happens that the Write for Your Life podcast has been acquired for literally no money at all by the 70Decibels network. That means it’s going to be a weekly gig and I’ll have a trusty steed in Myke Hurley who’ll be on hand to co-host and...

I made a Spotify list of stuff I’ve been listening to this year. It wasn’t necessarily released this year. But I listened to it anyway. Just because I could.

A new site for The Workshop →
I’ve spent the best part of six weeks working on the new company website here at The Workshop. It’s very much a 1.0, but that’s an achievement in itself.
When you work for a busy design agency, it’s difficult to set the time aside to work on your own projects. So we decided to dedicate this short period of development time to the site and then iterate as we go.

How CCTV can improve your productivity. This is something I recorded a couple of years ago. Here’s the theory behind it.
I found it because I was looking through my videos on Vimeo to try and find one where I liked my hair.
What? What’s wrong with that?

– I want you to stop speed reading | Write for Your Life
My thoughts on speed reading and why, especially if you’re a writer, you should probably pack it in.

Old lyrics and blank Gatsby
Believe it or not, I used to sing in a band. And believe it or not again, I was terrible at writing lyrics. Apart from one song, which I rather liked. It was called, lengthily, Mary Dropped a Plate and Everyone Applauded, and included the verse:
Their eyes met on the dance floor. The chapel disco was known for miles around. Everyone who’s someone said so. Barney took a towel and Mary wore...

Volume #01 – an audiobook from Write for Your Life →
Volume #01 is a digital audiobook of Write for Your Life articles published on the site in its first year. Originally good old text-based posts, you can now get the said-out-loud experience performed by the author himself. That’s me, Iain. Hello there.
I have finally got round to selling something through Write for Your Life. If you are a) a wonderful human being, and b) interested in...

Transmedia Design for 3 Screens - Make That 5 |... →
I am a screen-size bigot: bigger screens deliver hugely higher user productivity. Anyone who’s experienced a 30-inch monitor cringes at the idea of doing a major project on anything smaller. I’m astounded that PC makers don’t offer even bigger screens. (I’d be first in line for a 40-inch screen with 300 dpi crispness.)
Uncle Jakob is talking nonsense here. A 40-inch...

“Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works. The design of the Mac wasn’t what it looked like, although that was part of it. Primarily, it was how it worked. To design something really well, you have to get it….

Put away your guilty slipper
It’s amazing how the closer you get to a really important thing - event, deadline, or in my case wedding - all other things gradually grind to a halt. And that’s the way it has to be, of course. When something really matters, you have to get it right. All those other things, from getting a good night’s sleep to maintaining a blog, are inevitably less important.
And it’s...
