Spend at least twice as much time editing as you do writing. Slave over every detail, sweat every word and punctuation mark. Read what you write over and over again.
This is taken from a very insightful interview with Patrick Rhone of Minimal Mac, posted at Ian Hines’ marvellous Intrvws.
I recently wrote an apparently divisive post (read the comments!) over at Write for Your Life, where I talked about my frustration at a tweet that advised, ‘the best writing comes from the heart’.
Nonsense. This quote from Patrick is spot on. The best writing comes from blood, sweat, tears and a fair bit of planning and objectivity. No shortcuts.
