Frank McCourt on writing about poverty
I like that he talks about the psychological effects of what he’s writing about - in his case, poverty.
It seems obvious, but when writing about tough subjects (or any subject actually), it’s easy for writers to fall into the trap of regurgitating their research.
No one wants to read fiction for lists and technical terms. It’s the characters we care about. And of course, what happens to them.
