Not exactly how I’d imagined it when I read and fell in love with Gatsby as a teenager, but still.
An advance is a “pre-payment” of the royalties the publisher expects you to earn on your book.

A handy, straightforward overview of advances. Important information to know if you’re looking to get your writing published.

(via Watersones announces deal to sell Kindle — EBOOK...

(via Watersones announces deal to sell Kindle — EBOOK MAGAZINE)

To argue in favour of this accusation were broadcaster and noted Christian Malcolm Muggeridge and Mervyn Stockwood (the then Bishop of Southwark). In its defence were two members of the Monty Python team, John Cleese and Michael Palin.

I found this fascinating and unbelievably frustrating in equal measure.
Freedom - Internet Blocking Productivity Software

Freedom is the world-famous app that locks you away from the ‘net so you can be productive. If the internet is distracting you from your work, Freedom might be the best 10 dollars you’ll ever spend.

Pretty much the only thing that got me through the most difficult points of writing my novel. It turns off your internet connection and makes it a complete pain in the arse to turn it back on again until the time limit has elapsed. This is a good thing.

I won’t say it again as that’s me talking in the second blockquote. A simple, but extremely effective app.

The Leaked Pulitzer Fiction Memos : The New Yorker

The Leaked Pulitzer Fiction Memos : The New Yorker:
Very good.

Everything my novel is not.
